ForagerOne is a great resource for students at any level to connect with researchers across all divisions and levels across Hopkins. We recommend that after you identify researchers you are interested in, you complete further web searches to find their lab/ research site, departmental page, recent publications, and any other information to be sure your interests align with their work and you are prepared to start your outreach.
Use our best practices on the Get Started tabs in conjunction with ForagerOne to optimize your outreach.
Breaking down ForagerOne features
Refine by (left side options)
Collaboration Status:
If you choose to filter by any of these statuses, we recommend ONLY selecting Accepting Students. Why limit yourself!
- Accepting Students – shows a blue button on the faculty page – That researcher has claimed their ForagerOne profile and opened their availability to show they are happy to hear from students. On its own, this means they do not have experience requirements or a specific project in mind; they are just happy to have a conversation with interested students.
- Posted Project – That researcher is sharing a unique project they are recruiting students for. They all have shared some level of scope:
- Student level (undergrad, master’s, etc.)
- Opportunity Type (or compensation) – note all faculty can offer research for credit (CALs), but they might not understand the process.
- Time Commitment – how many hours/ week they expect or can offer
- Project description – In addition to sharing what the project entails, they may include required skills/ qualifications as well as specific instructions on how to apply (always follow their instructions when provided!).
- Posted Remote Projects – Remote/ virtual projects that do not require on-site participation. Often analysis, computational, or writing/ editing projects.
- Not Accepting Students – shows a red button on the faculty page – That researcher has claimed their ForagerOne profile but is letting you know they are not currently bringing new students into their research. You can check back to see if they have changed their status.
Projects Seeking:
We do NOT recommend using this filter at all!
Division & Department:
Hopkins is a very interdisciplinary institution with faculty collaborating across departments and divisions. Limiting yourself to unique departments can remove potentially amazing opportunities from your consideration!
