Opportunities

Apply for HOUR programs

All HOUR programs are open to registered Hopkins undergraduates in good standing and strongly encourage applications from students from underserved backgrounds or those with no prior research experience.

Explore great online resources

HOUR staff has identified these sites to help students identify external opportunities and funding during the academic year and for summer.

Identify JHU faculty & researchers >

ForagerOne is a resource database featuring Hopkins faculty and researchers from across all divisions. The platform allows students at all levels to identify and connect with researchers and projects that match their interests.

Search “Opportunities” on ForagerOne>

If you are looking for Hopkins supported research programs, conference travel support, or other highlighted programs. Once you are logged on to ForagerOne, select the OPPORTUNITIES tab across the top menu and scroll through the many opportunities! Be sure to visit each opportunity’s unique site to verify all dates and other relevant information.*

*HOUR is not responsible for missed deadline dates or other program changes.

If you have any questions, encounter problems, or know of something we should include here, please contact [email protected].

Undergraduate researchers proposing projects working with human subjects in any manner:

All new projects involving human subjects (including interviews) MUST be approved by the Homewood Institutional Review Board (HIRB) office prior to starting the project. Information about HIRB requirements and the approval process can be found here. Contact [email protected] with any questions and to begin the approval process prior to starting any research. This process can take some time, so be prepared and start early! If you are working with a faculty mentor, verify with them if your project is covered by an existing IRB they already have approved.
In order for HOUR to release funding for such projects, students must provide an IRB determination letter or their mentor’s associated IRB number for our files.

Undergraduate researchers proposing projects requiring international travel:

All projects involving international travel (including a country you are a citizen of) MUST be registered and approved by the Global Education Office (GEO) prior to traveling. Contact [email protected] prior to scheduling your trip. This process may take 4-6 weeks, so plan accordingly.
For HOUR to release funding for such projects, students must provide an approval letter from GEO for our records.

Intellectual Property

All of the programming, resources, and funding at HOUR are free and non-dilutive. For information about University Student Intellectual Property (IP) Policies and other related questions, please visit The Pava Marie LaPere Center for Entrepreneurship.

For ANY student needing signed documents to participate in external research, internship, and other immersive opportunities (both domestic and international):

HOUR is unable to provide such letters or sign the requested documents.

We understand the value of student internships, externships, practicums, and other experiential learning opportunities with host institutions. However, JHU is limited in its ability to enter in an agreement with any host institution.
JHU may enter into an agreement with a host institution for a student learning experience when:*
A. The agreement, or a letter, is required solely to verify that the student is enrolled at JHU in an academic degree program. In this case the student should open a SEAM ticket through the Registrar’s Office at https://support.sis.jhu.edu/find-answers/records-and-registration/verify-my-enrollment.
OR
B. When the student internship or externship is part of an academic curriculum requirement counting toward a degree in one of the JHU schools (in this scenario there must be a JHU faculty advisor and an educational plan and goals consistent with the degree curriculum for the student to complete during the internship or externship). This must request will go through more verifications and be ultimately completed via the appropriate advising office associated with your primary school (Krieger School of Arts and Sciences or Whiting School of Engineering).
*NOTE: the process to get your opportunity approved, all associated documents signed, and returned to you may take 2 weeks or longer. Please plan accordingly.
