Research Training
For all online courses or trainings below:
- Navigate to http://my.jh.edu and log in using your Hopkins credentials.
- Select the Education category and look for myLearning (we recommend clicking the heart to “bookmark” this resource).
- Once logged into myLearning, put the specific name of your training into the Catalog Search field. (if you struggle to find it, unclick “exact phrase” and try again as they may have renamed the course).
- If there is a certificate of completion available upon completion, be sure to “print to PDF” and save to your computer or follow listed directions to receive your certificate. You may need to share it with your supervisor as proof of completion.
Laboratory Safety Introductory Course (8 modules)
- Recommended (and often required) for (wet) lab research.
- Course contains 8 online modules with a certificate upon completion of each module.
- Estimated time to complete all modules is 3 hours.
Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP)
- Recommended (and often required) for research where you may come in contact with blood and/ or body fluids.
- This orientation to bloodborne pathogens (BBP) course is intended to:
- Define a BBP and identify types of diseases that may be associated with BBP exposure
2. Identify routes of BBP exposure and ways to prevent exposure
3. Describe the actions that should be taken if exposed to a BBP.
- Estimated time to complete is 15 minutes.
IRB Compliance Training Bundle (3 courses)
- IRB compliance training is required for all PIs and Study Team Members who are engaged in human subjects research. Initial training must be completed prior to submission of a human subjects research application in eIRB.
- Includes three mandatory online courses:
- Basic Human Subjects Research – Biomedical Research(CITI): Required training for students listed on an IRB application and recommended for all students working with human subjects in any field.
- Researchers(CITI): Recommended course for all students working with human subjects and health data/ information. This course provides information on the core elements of the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements. Additional content is meant to supplement by focusing on healthcare roles and types of activities, since HIPAA’s requirements are largely conditioned by the purposes behind the collection, use or disclosure of health information.
- Conflict of Interest and Commitment: Designed to introduce researchers to the topic of financial conflicts of interest in research, including what financial conflict of interest means, sources and risks of financial conflicts of interest in research, federal regulations and institutional policies designed to address the risks, and researchers’ obligations under federal and institutional regulations and policies.
Patient Privacy for Workforce Members
- This course provides an overview of patient privacy topics and resources for finding additional information about HIPAA and patient privacy.
- Estimated time to complete is 20 minutes.
Electronic Information Security and Data Management Training
- This module covers data breaches and how you can help avoid similar problems at Johns Hopkins.
Animal Care and Use (ACUC)
- Required for all students utilizing or working with animals in their research.
- This program provides crucial information about the regulations, policies, and practices that must be followed when working with animals at JHU. You’ll learn about what you need to do to ensure that animals are cared for properly and treated humanely.
- Estimated time to complete is 20 minutes.
Chemical Waste Management
- The course is designed to instruct labs how to dispose of properly the chemical wastes they generate.
Working in the Rodent Vivarium
- In this program, you’ll learn about the procedures that must be followed when working in the rodent vivarium. You’ll learn how to enter and exit the facility, use the microisolation technique, maintain procedure rooms, and properly manage, house, and care for the animals.
- Estimated time to complete is 30 minutes.
