A leading urban and environmental economist, Matthew E. Kahn examines the relationship between urban economic growth and greenhouse gas emissions production and the consequences of climate change for urban quality of life.
Kahn’s research investigates the causes and consequences of urban economic growth. He currently serves as director of the 21st Century Cities Initiative, which supports the interdisciplinary examination of urban economic opportunity and quality of life. The initiative has conducted workshops and symposiums, written policy briefs, awarded seeds grants, and fostered student research opportunities designed to address fundamental urban problems. Kahn is working to increase 21CC’s focus on quantitative research and innovative data collection, as well as to establish collaborations with community development experts and policymakers to identify new strategies for supporting the city of Baltimore.
Kahn joined Johns Hopkins University as a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor in 2019 from the University of Southern California.
